4th gen's appear to be able to get away with it easier than a 3rd gen can. I tried with my 91, and the only way you're going to get the sending unit/pump out with cutting a "hatch" is if you cut all of your steel lines. Then you'll have to flare and fitting at least the high pressure supply line so you don't blow the car up by using a half-assed hose patch technique instead. I went that far with mine and ended up dropping the tank and doing it the right way. Here's what the tank and solid lines look like:
