Default carb

i replaced my carb on my car with one i got from a friend. it has electonic choke and the car had a tpi unit on it so how do i run the electronic choke for the car and also the car runs like crap when the choke is open and runs good when the choke is closed is that meaning the car is getting to much fuel when the choke is open

Is that running like crap and good when the engine is cold or warm or both or what? And if you have a field terminal on your alternator then you can hook the choke wire to it. That way it only gets power while the engine is running and wont open with the key on and engine off.

What kind of carb, Quadrajunk, Holley, Edelbrock?
And when you converted from TPI to carb, did you just hook up the fuel line directly to the carb? If you're still using the stock in-tank electric fuel pump and didn't install a fuel pressure regulator before the carb, you have waaaay too much pressure going to the carb. If it isn't happening now, eventually fuel will start to blow past the needle and seat and cause the carb to overflow. At that point, having a properly functioning choke will be the least of your worries.

Well the Edelbrock may be your problem. They are Junk out of the box. They are made by Weber USA and Weber UAS gave Weber a bad name. I would take a Quadrajet over an Edelbrock any day. They are not complex carbs and are great for normal driving.
You might want to spray some carb clean around the throttle shaft on the Edelbrock. That is a common bad area on those. You can get them new from the box with a loose throttle shaft.
