For your info a 2nd gen rear will not work and the 4th gen rears are the same 10-bolt & ratios found on 3rd gen cars. Afternarket 12-bolts & 9'" rears are your only options for a stronger rear axle. Just expect to pay $2500+.

Well, you can go with the 3.73 rear from a 4th gen, just upgrade the suspension/shocks and buy an adaptor so that you can throw your 3rd gen wheels back on it.

Actually the 4th gen rear is about 2 1/2 inches wider than the 3rd gen rear. but otherwise will bolt right in, if you are changing from drum brakes to disc, then you'll have the change the master cylinder and portioning valve as well, and adapt your e-brake cables as well.

Good luck on that 2-series 2:73 open rear holding up. Word of advice don't try any burnouts if you want that rear to hold up. There is NO cheap way for you to go with 3:73 route with your present set-up. Eaton Limited Slip $400+( 3-series), gear set $250+. bearing, seals and lube $150 and since this NOT a normal DIY job $400 labor for about $1200 my estimate. For this you may get 3 or 4 passes at the drag strip with the weak 10-bolt. So start saving your money for that 12-bolt or 9" rear. Might want to rethink the 700R4 auto also.

I'm in the same exact situation, i'm in the middle of putting in a 475hp stroker and I'm a little worried about the rear, but I also am putting in a fully built hughes 700r4 (newly named 4l60) both the engine builder and the tranny builder said the rear end is not as bad as people think they are. I will need a posi unit, so I've been sourcing a good one ($ is not a huge concern, but its still on my mind) what gear sets will work to get me where I need to be? and where is a good source to get them through?

As stated in a above Post the Eaton Limited Slip would be my choice and the same for the 12-bolt or 9" ford. Otherwise you are throwing money away.
