building up the 305
i want to build up the 305, because i dont have enough money to buy a 350 crate and i am thinking of doing this https://camaroforums.com/m_7367/tm.htm does anybody know if this would be a good way to go to get some decent power out of the 305 without having to tear it down?
not quite sure you are aware that what they did in that article cost the better part of $2500.00 or probably more in parts. you can get crates cheaper than that. if your on a budget ... forget the frills and look for camshaft with as close to a .480 lift as possible ( No Higher ) any higher lift and you will have to modify the valve train. try to find one that has a lopey duration as close to .300 as you can get. speed pro sells one that works great in a 305 yet i can't recall the model number. use a weiand stealth dual plane intake and a holley 600 cfm. make sure and gasket match the heads and intake. this build will give you close to an extra 75 to 100 HP and yet will only cost you about $500 in parts. putting a thousand dollar set of heads on a 305 is a waste of money the bore is too small. you'll spend a fortune and only gain 20 or so horsepower. you can do the same by rebuilding the 305 heads with 1.94 valves pocket porting and shaving them .2000's. them articles are great and all but quite frankly they just aren't practicle.
