Sorry about the engine blowing, although its awesome how this transformed from a 400 build to a 283 build , two equally iconic engines as the 350. The 283 you can bore the same as a 327 small block, although I would like to know the year of your engine is it a 1968 up? . Your stock rods are 5.7" also. The 283 and 307 blocks can be safely bored much farther than a 350 or 400 small block because of the block design and water jackets. Although it costs I little more because there is so much material to be removed. You may bore the 283 block to 4.060" if you wanted , but I suggest a 4" bore size, this way you have many reboring options and huge cylinderwall strength beyond that of a 350 and 400 would be capable of. Your stock deck height is 9.020" is this still the same? If so or not doesn't matter but I need to know for your ultimate build. I shall assume a stock deck height of 9.020" that it is accurate. For this build you shall bore to 4" it cost slightly more because its like a major overbore. leave your stock deck height the same. You use an offset ground crank that fits your mains the offset stroke grind is 3.818" stroke and 1.909" radius. this uses the 350 piston to fit a 6" rod ALTHOUGH, you shall be using the 5.85" ROD. and the 1.261" piston and .040" head gasket. This is the ultimate piston size compression height to use for street and performance because you can get it without the darn gas ports. Do this and you shall have a 384 cubic inch stroker 283, with your camel humps at 64cc and your piston relief at 8 CC . You shall have a static compression ratio of 10.8 to 1 and with a comp cams retro roller XR276HR an 8.9to1 dynamic compression and shall be equally good with the larger XR282HR 8.6to1 Dynamic Compression Ratio , and XR288HR 8.4to1 dynamic (DCR) for street. get your pistons with 4cc relief and Dremel polish them smooth and rounded and cc to 8cc or leave them for the larger cams. use a O.O4O" mls head gasket. You may go 3.828" stroke and .use a O.O45" head gasket and have 385 cubic inches and O.O4O" quench distance with all of this. With a 4.030" bore you shall have a 390 cubic incher. large small block norm valve size and big 195cc and 200cc heads on street car are non issue at this point. Although I would definitely use AFR 180cc heads or Pro Maxx maxxseries 183cc heads, because those are the best for the money and the highest quality heads on market. They fix any engine and make it run smooth. they flow similar and offer more street performance than the larger heads and are more efficient. There is a guy with a zero decked 350 and AFR 180CC competition cut special order heads and a cam with rpm intake that runs 11's in a second gen with a mild cam. The AFR comp cut 180s are better than AFR 195s even though they flow similar numbers with the 180s comp cut flowing better numbers. there is a sbc 396 stroker chevy 350 2nd gen on youtube with comp cut AFR 180CC heads and runs 11's. Even though without these heads and using the camelhumps you shall have an awesome engine that shall force air through them, however there is engine shutter caused from all the factory heads that the smoother running engine due to the aluminum heads just don't have. The performance is Omazing, the sound is Omazing and a true quality build. You can use your 3.75" crank gind it and you may need to grind machine your block mains. but when its working you shall smile ear to ear.

Along with above suggestion, install a head, couple bolts are good, and view into cylinders from crankcase side in seeing if bores will clear valves when opened.

Ehhhhh... this is a 12 year old post! Although, as projects sometimes go, he still could be working on it.
