my 92 rs 3.1 has been running off recently and the other day it completly died on me while driving to school. it has had recent idle problems and every once in awhile it has accelerating problems but i popped the hood and turned the car on. it was running fine till i pulled the throttle and it made a wierd sound and black smoke shot from the side above the exhaust out on top of the engine and out the exhaust pipes. i already changed the fuel filter and i always do routine maintenance. please help.

 

best thing to do first is to have it scanned for trouble codes.

yea the check engine light is on. and i cant find anywhere to get it checked. everywhere i know only does it on 1996 cars n up

 

should be able to use the paper clip trick on a 92. this should be the same for you

Yep, paper clip will work. Next time it's running, go back to the tailpipe and check to see how well the exhaust is flowing. It almost sounds like your exhaust is plugged, possibly a restricted/melted/broken apart cat converter.
