Default Question about gas tank...

Alright, my dad and I are attempting to rebuild our 85 camaro tpi. And we've run into our first problem, involving the gas tank. The car has been sitting for so long that the gas in the tank has kinda turned into a thick, sludge. We have to syphon out the leftover gas/sludge and then drop the tank, to get around everything. But when we stuck the syphon kit hose into the tank, there was something stopping the hose from going all the way into the tank, thus making it impossible to syphon anything out of the tank. My question is, is it even possible to get the hose that far down into the tank, or is there some sort of a screen or something blocking the passage of foreign objects into the tank? Any help would be awesome guys, thanks.

there is typicly a screen halfway down the filler neck. it isnt removable, so you will have to drop the tank to drain it. just be careful when doing so. i hope you planned on dropping the tank anyway. if i were you, id replace the fuel pump while you were at it

if it is as bad as you say it is, it would probably be easier to replace the tank. I just changed the tank in my camaro with one from a salvage yard. I don't know what the prices are wherever you are but in thewest texas area you can get a tank for 35 to 50 dollars. just make sure to check the fuel sender on the old tank, it will probably be all craped up too.
