Default problems with my choke....i think

i got an 83 camaro Z28, i have the idle set pretty high for now, its at like 1200, but after driving a while if i slow down at a light or a stopsign, the rpms go way down and its wants to shut off on me..ive had this happen too many times now and im gettin frustrated..i heard i might be the choke doing this,,but how do i go about ajusting it or whatever??

Have you check to see if your choke is working and opening fully? You might just need to properly adjust your carb and timing. Check and make sure the choke opens fully and linkage works freely and there are no vacuum leaks.

Your fast idle is because of your fast idle screw adjustment on the choke linkage. But 1200 rpm really isn't too high for a cold engine. As the engine warms up, the choke linkage cam rotates and the fast idle screw steps down to the lower pawls of the choke cam. That's why the idle drops down on you after driving it a while. Then the throttle linkage (on drivers side of carb) drops down and should rest on the curb idle screw. With the engine warm, check your idle screw at the front corner of the drivers side of the carb, and turn it in clockwise until you get it to the rpm's you want.
Read this, choke info starts on page 18: Quadrajet Carb Manual
