pontiac 301 also known as the 4.9 litre motor was used in 1981, the last year for 2nd gen T/A's. they were available in 2 variations, the carbed version and the turbo version. 2 special edition urbo editions were made, the Smokey and the Bandit T/A and the Daytona 500 T/A.

i know alot about pontiacs, sorry

the 305 heads will NOT bolt up. also tell your buddy building a 301 is an excercise in futility. the 301 block was very weak and barley stood up to the 4 psi turbo boost that was on pontiacs "fast" version. the blocks are better suited as boat achors than race motors. find a 305 or a 350 and build a stronger, more reliable, and ALOT cheaper motor. parts for 301's are scarce and very expensive.

The Pontiac 301 is a dud at best. Physically, it's the same as a 455 and just don't make too much power. I've seen guys in the forum compare the Pontiac to the Chevy engine and think they're related. They are completely different families of engines and no parts will interchange. Period. NOT THE SAME.

Didn't pontiac stop making it's own motors for that very reason?

No. The Pontiac engine has been a reliable, good performing engine in general. It was a Corporate thing to reduce tooling costs like Ford has done with its shared engines.
