Bunces like CrAzY or just moves up and down as you go up and down hills? I think and I might be wrong but aren't these older ones on a gravity bob or something like that??? SO depending on the motion of the fuel the gauge will alter?

it sounds like the accending unit in the tank.... the float could be messed up.

You may want to take a good look at all the electrical connections on the gauge circuit, just in case something is loose.

You can test the gauge itself. Disc the connection and the gage goes to full, put 12 volt across the gage terminal and it should show empty. That is if you can get to it.

You can test the sending unit with an analog voltmeter (cheap one with a dial from Radio Shack) and probe the leads to the sending unit. Start the engine and drive around & see if the voltmeter acts as crazy as the gage. If it does, and all connections are good, u got a bad sending unit.

The bad part about changing the sending unit is that it is inside of the tank and in late model Camaros there is no access to the tank. U need to take out the rear axle and drop the tank. Don't know what model u have, but in older cars they used to put an opening with cover to allow acces to the tank.

Some shops cut a hole in floor, then screw a metal plate over the hole, and cover it back up with the floor carpet, and charge labor as if they done it the right way.

Do't know for sure about the 86, but pull up the carpet behind the rear seat & see if if there is a cover plate on the floor above the tank.
