Crankcase/Timing Cover removal on 173cid(2.8l) from 1989 V6.Need Help!!
Hi Everbody
I have a severe problem trying to remove the front timingcover on 173cid(2.8l) from a 1989.In fact it leaks(coolant fluid)between the block andthis cover.
In my Haynesan Chilton books (unfortunaletely I do not have the 1989 Shop manual), they write to remove thevibration damper (what I did), the water pump (what I did I uploaded the picture of it and there is the problemI think) the oil pan-to front cover bolts (what i did...2 bolts / on 3.1liter/189cid they write to remove the whole oil pan, why I do not know??),the 3 remainingtiming cover bolts at the ground (what I did too). The picture in these books are not the same of mine (they are from earlier V6 [:@])

But this cover did move just a bit, but seems to be fixed somewhere else."This somewhere else" is the place on the picture i addedof the missinghole on the waterpump (there are10 bolts in all retaining this waterpump). In fact at this place there is not a bolt but a "pin" (do not know if this isoriginal (seems not to me/do not know what they have done to the car before???)sortof helper to keep the water pump gasket in place (I think) fixed in thetimingcover.
Tried to remove this pin,but did not move (to rusty)My only solution I think is to bore trough it but will wait on your suggestions
.Perhaps they had broken the bolt once and pushed a pinthi it...[&o]??
.Perhaps they had broken the bolt once and pushed a pinthi it...[&o]??I will make a picture of it when I go back in a week in my barnif nobody can suggest me something.
I already hammered witha wood all around the cover(thinking it was sticking) but nothing moves.
So if anyone out there can help me,or knows someone with the same car( I know the 305/350cid engines are much more powerful; wish i have one),or canlook in his 1989 camaroshop manual and post me the procedureon marsonrobbi@yahoo.com, i would be very grateful.
thank you allin advance

There should be two guide pins, one on ech side of the cover, just above the bottom bolts. Try to avoid damaging the pins as they are needed to properly place the cover on the block. The oil pan has to be dropped enough so that it is fully clear of the timing cover, which means that all the oil pan bolts need to be loosened as much as possible. If all front cover bolts have been removed, you should then be able to pry the cover off. You may try using penetrating oil on the pins and let it sit for a day or so, to get things loose.
If I remember correct the pan does not need to be unbolted. It may help when sealing it back up but the cover is flat on the bottom.
But Like Pete says there are two locating dowls. Those and the gasket glued on makes the cover feel likes its still bolted on.

Thanks z28pete and MadmikeZ28 for your answers.
Yeah I remember there are two locating dowls/pins on the bottom of the cover, but there is another on the top where the pump is attached (look at the picture above, there are 10 bolts around and one is a hole where the pin comes out).Is that original???Or is there a bolt inside the coverwhich havebeen broken times before and put a pin on it??Because it's look like it is sticking at this position. Will look at itthis weekend,(will make a picture if Iloose the fight against the machine again
)butI thinkthe pins on the bottom are not sticking.
