If it's the original computer controlled Quadrajet, keep it. Nothing aftermarket is going to perform better than that carb. If it's like most Qjets it's probably in need of a rebuild. Get a rebuild kit and a can of solvent and go at it.

For the intake, if you want to spend the coin a basic Edelbrock Performer or equivalent will suffice. You will need the spread bore version for the Qjet. If your EGR is in place keep that in mind when ordering one.

If you're just starting out, a carb rebuild might be a little difficult for you. I'd say go for it though. Books can be had for around $20 bucks to rebuild a Qjet that have detailed step by step instructions with pictures. It will still be cheaper than paying someone to do it and you'll learn something in the process.

The Edelbrock Performer has both square bore and spread bore patterns drilled for either setup.

Sorry, I should have worded it a little clearer. I know the Edelbrock Performer is dual drilled, I just said he needed a square bore intake if he looks at something other than a Performer.

In my opinion, a home rebuild of a carb never comes out right. Especially not for a guy with little experience. All you can really do is change gaskets and blow out jets an passages. It never worked for me. I'd suggest he gets a rebuilt q-jet. Carbs can be real fussy.......
