Oh yeah. It was a silly issue between a non stock t-stat housing and a few clamps that I needed to tighten the living snot out of. Live and learn, dont overlook the simple stuff.

you know i find it comical some of the fixes people come up with.
now lemme tell you something that people still dont believe to this day but it works. if i am doing a thermostat housing. i do this. take the thermostat housing off. find a flat spot on the driveway. rub the thermostat housing on the FLAT SPOT to make it flat. get the recommended gasket for it then torque it down to the correct spec. i think the sbc is about 15ft lbs. i torque mine to 20 ft lbs with the original gasket. i also apply a very thin coat of silicone. (THIN COAT ONLY). IT NEVER LEAKS. if you have to tighten the hoses too much then there is a problem there as well.

^ I've done that a few times in the past, but on a piece of tempered glass. The problem is the cheaply made thin base water necks just end up warping all over again. I now use the ones that have a super thick base, and an o-ring to seal it.
These styles tend to warp and leak: Bad Water Neck
These don't: Good Water Neck

I usually advice when your car has a leak it possible need replacement. The moment your thermostat fails to keep the coolant from entering the engine.. Remember, as the engine is started, the cooling system will also start working. It's the duty of the thermostat to block the coolant from flowing straight to the engine.
