have you check your valve guide seals? some place's put cheap one on when they rebuild there heads.
if the intake one are bad ,it will smoke some when running. if exhaust one are bad ,then it will smoke when you first start it up.

When you say compression was good, what were your readings for each cylinder?

some times the intake do not seal all the way in the lifter valley side. which will cause vacuum leak. which will suck any oil into that cylinder.

you say you did compression check.
did you do one dry and one wet? if not ,your not going to see if your any ring are sucking oil.
do normal compression test dry to get all the readings. then go back and in each cylinder put about 3 to 5 pumps of 20w50 oil from a oil pump gun. if your compression increase in that cylinder, then your ring fine but if you have one that don't increase, then your oil ring in that cylinder not working and leave the cylinder wall wet.
