Default Brake Problems

Well I'm having a vacuum problem with running a big cam on my 350 that I dropped in my '84 Camaro. The vacuum canister didn't work so now I ordered an electric vacuum pump from Stainless Steel Brakes. I do have one question. What does a proportioning valve do? Do I need one with my stock braking system. I'm hoping that my hard brake pedal will be solved by this electric vacuum pump creating more vacuum.

Well Fudge!
My brother cured his vacuum problem with one of those tanks. Do you have the source coming from the manifold? Is your booster good?
The proportioning valve sends a different amount of fluid between the front and rear brakes.

Yea my booster is supposedly good...the guy whos doin it for me said he had the same problem when running a big cam. He said the tank is not enough and you have to get an electric pump. So $300 later (price of the pump) I really hope it'll solve my problem. Well I'll see on Monday. Thanks for the info on the proportioning valve.
