Default ??? about adjusting drum brakes.

OK, lets get back to basics.....I think I need to adjust my rear brakes. Reason 1) they are starting to squeak on my first couple of stops (all new hardware, cylinders to springs) 2) MY pedal feels mushy for the first inch and Ive already bled the lines several times 3)I just wanna rule it out.

Is there any guide line or simple way to do this? Ive always in the past dont it with the wheel off and felt by hand till it started catching and then backed the adjuster off a bit. Any suggestions?

adjusting with the wheel off is a fast and easy way to get them close. I do that and push on the pedal with the drum on to center the shoes inside the drum. You will see after you center them it will be loose again. Then put the wheel on and go through the adjuster hole while turning the wheel in its forward direction. Once you feel you have it close push on the brake to center the shoes again and see how the drag feels.
