I know you could have a 96-97 PCM tuned to work as a stand alone system. Also you could even get setup for an original 4l60e and just tune out all those sub systems your car does not have. I am not sure about the tuning process pre 96. Now if your looking for a hobby check out the Mega squirt system. Its a stand alone system you build yourself. I know a few guys that are addicted to the Mega squirt system.
Most after market stand alone system are very pricey. Simplest thing I can think of is finding a 93 computer and wiring harness. I think Craby mention they are getting harder to find.
With the amout of work and money this is going to cost is there a reason you don't go with the LS1 route?

It has been awhile but I am pretty sure the 89 700R4 does not have a "bell housing" it is a one pc tranny. So no matter what that would need replaced, Also GM configures all of its transmission based on the application. So a 700R4 sitting behind a L98 V8 will have differents clutch pack and even gears sets then one sitting behind a V6. So what I am saying is that even IF your 700R4 tranny had a bell housing it would last about 10 minutes behind a 300 hp LT1 because it was configured to deal with 146hp.
I am not sure why no one mentioned the motor mounts, your going to have to modify the motor mounts, SBC mount are a little different.
If you can find a V8 700R4 most of them came from car with less then 200hp so the stock ones will not hold up long. During a normal rebuild it is easy to upgrade the tranny to handle a stock LT1.
The fuel system will need swapped. The v6 fuel pump and lines are nowhere near big enough and for some reason I am thinking the 2.8 was a 60 PSI system but I have not worked on one for 20+ years.

to the OP
in all honesty, unless your car is in pristine shape other than the powertrian then don't bother doing it. You'd be better off finding a different vehicle with a v8 if that's what you want and take how ever many $hundreds a buyer is willing to pay for your v6 3rd gen

The late 80's 350 or L98 motors are good motors but they are getting hard to find. Seems the Corvette owners snach them up when they do show up. If you go with a L98 you going to need the Motor/Wiring Harness/ECM, Trans, radiator, Fuel pump and lines, From that point on its just bolt it up. Your best bet is to just find a wrecked car.
They are not much cheaper then the LT1s. Infact they are gtting harder to find and may have passed the LT1's in value

Just make 100% sure its a 350 NOT a 305. The 305's have weak bottom ends and can not be pushed hard or modded very much. Most of the time when you find a cheap L98 350 it someone trying to pass off a 305.
