First you need to buy one that fits the battery holder, and the type of terminal to match the battery cables; the store will have a catalog with the proper size. Second you need to decide how long you are going to keep the car. For the same size, better batteries have more capacity, longer warranties, and usually a higher price. Within the same brand name you usually get what you pay for. There are only a few battery manfacturers, suh as Exide, and they produce batteries with various brand names and specs to be sold by different vendors.

Duralast batteries from Autozone arent the most reliable, well at least with my experience.

My car came with a Duralast battery when I bought it almost five years ago. Never have had a problem, helped a number of other cars to start with it too.

I once had a conversation with a guy who worked at a battery company. The batteries would come down a conveyor, then split off into different lines where they received their own label to turn them into a variety of "name brands. There are only a few major battery manufacturers.
For instance, Johnson Controls makes the Duralast, Sears Diehard, some of the Walmart EverStart's, Ford Motorcraft, Interstate, and Costco's Kirkland battery.
Maybe your car just didn't like the label that was on your battery.

Battery 101,
There are basically three types of automotive batteries.

1. Wet cell or flooded batteries. This type has the lead plates submerged in a liquid acid. These also will leak if punctured or inverted and the plates can touch and short out from vibration. They also outgas while charging which causes corrosion.

2. Gell cell. These use the same basic plate design as the wet cell but the acid is thickened with an additive so it has the consistancy similar to jello. These type batteries do not outgas and will not leak if punchered or inverted but the plates can short out from vibration.

3. AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) These batteries use very thin lead plates with a special fiberglass mat between each lead plate. These plates and mats are stacked and then compressed to fit in the cell of the case or can be rolled into a round cell. Then only the amount of acid which can be absorbed by the fiberglass is added to each cell. The result is a very leak proof and vibration proof battery. The best known AGM batteries are the Optima line but there are other better quality batteries such as Odyssey made by EnerSys.

Here is a good Wikipedia article on AGM batteries.

Just a side note, EnerSys also makes the Sears DieHard Platinum AGM batteries.

The vast majority of batteries on the road today are wet cell primarily due to cost. The average driver simply is more concerned about price than quality. On the other hand, virtually all high end street rods and racing applications use AGM batteries due to the much higher level of quality and safety.
