Differences you can see:
kick down cable = TH350,
No kickdown cable = TH400,
TH400-6 bolts in the tail housing
TH350-4 bolts
TH350 vacuum modulator faces right
TH400 Vacuum modulator faces back
Easiest way is the shape of the drainpan. The 400 pan resembles
the state of Texas.

Yes, but your shifter linkage could be out of adjustment not allowing you to manually put it in first gear. When you move your shifter all the way to the rear position (1st gear) it's really only going into 2nd gear, but since you're not moving and don't have a manual valve body the tranny automatically go's into 1st gear as it would if you put it in drive. Even though you use a cable to shift, there is also linkage that connects to the gear position indicator on the dash. At least that's how they are on '78 Camaros. That's what was wrong with my '78.

I didn't fix mine yet because I pulled the motor and tranny so both could be rebuilt. I'm doing the motor. I don't know much about tranny's so I'm going to have a professional rebuild it and the rear end.

I need to re-check my TH350; but I think the modulator points forward on my '71? Of course this may be CRS kicking in again!
