Default stiff clutch

I just bought a 1974 Z28 LT. The person I bought it from did a good job of installing a Tremec 5 speed and used a hydraulic clutch/throw out bearing. The problem is the peddle pressure is pretty high.It is a PITA to drive in traffic. This is my first hydraulic clutch so I don't know if this is typical, or I just have a high performance pressure plate. It operates normally, very smooth engagement and no noise or vibration. I was told I may have the wrong master cylinder, but if that was the case I would assume the peddle return pressure would be less since the problem would be charging the slave. Again, I assume releasing the clutch would not force the peddle back as hard. Can anyone confirm one way or the other if the hydraulic clutch could have a problem, as opposed to it just being a strong pressure plate.
I have to take it apart in either case, but I want to have the right parts ready to install so I can get back on the road.
Thanks

Well I duuno but I can tell you that my '01 SS has a pretty damn stiff clutch too. I had an LS7 Corvette clutch installed with many other mods including a Tick Performance adjustable master cylinder and aluminum flywheel.
It was really stiff at first but after a couple thousand miles it has lightened up a bit and is more driveable. I have a pretty lumpy cam so that doesn't help much either, she's not a daily and doesn't see much city driving fortunately since I live in a rural area. Maybe you just need some more break in miles like mine did. Do you know what clutch was used?

Unfortunately no, although the previous owner gave me his receipts, the details on the clutch and pressure plate are not there. He put a lot of expensive high performance parts in the car, so I am thinking he didn't skimp on the pressure plate. Frankly I am more worried that the throwout bearing is the wrong application. The car was originally an automatic, so there is no z bar to go back to. Since he builds a lot of cars I'm afraid this may have been the dumping ground for leftover parts from other builds.
