The casting date is located on driver side rear of block on flange forward of bell housing. This will home in closer as to when the block was built... if it still has the Vin code on the front pad we can possibly tell what it came out of.

"The bolts on the front of the gear had scratched a grove into my timing cover. Thoughts????"

You had a walking cam... The cam, Lifters, timing chain cover and bearings are most likely TOAST! There is your low oil pressure to the rocker arms... the cam walked and the oil groves would not line up doing funky things there... I don't remember if the lifters get there oil from the cam or if it feeds from it's own feed... but I don't think you had good upper oil pressure... check the distributor for side play too. I might think of pulling the oil plugs in the block and running a rifle cleaning brush through them too... just some random ideas...

Ok, so what keeps the cam from walking?
I had the cam bearings checked at the shop and they where still in speck.
I'll check the block in the morning for the dates. Thanks

I have read that Roller cams need a cam Button on the nose of the cam to keep it from walking.... Others on here might know more about them... I have been in to many motors and have not ripped a GM motor apart in to many years to remember... How did the cam and lifters look?

The lifters look new. The cam has a slight discoloration on the center of the lobes, but no scratches or scaring. I've only seen the cam button one time, but I know what your talking about. I'll ask my parts guy about it when he gets in today. I should get my new main bearings in today. I've got a huge pile of parts and gaskets. Its like Xmas as a kid all over.

Factory rollers have a plate that bolts to the block behind the timing chain. I could tell yours was a roller from the pics still in the car. The lifters are held in by the "spider". Dead give away.

It doesn't have the retainer plate and thrust bearing still there? If so reuse them and forget the button.

the thrust bearing probably failed and got all burned up,all u need is a new thrust bearing,u dont really need the button unless u want it.
