I was doing some research on google and found a nice cutaway of the heads. I've done port work on harley heads before with some good results.
I think I can just get rid of the tooth looking bit, but I wanted to ask you guys first....

It will definitely help. Just don't get crazy. But now you know what I was getting at with them being crap. Maybe work the short turn just a bit.

I removed the left head and found ALOT more sealant. I found the exhaust valves are not seating properly. I removed the carbon build-up and got rid of the ramp looking thing that stuck out. I'll start on the intake side after I figure out how to get the valves seated the right way. I also found that the head gasket was not sealing in between the cylinders. Any thoughts on why that would be?

Use a straight edge on the block and the heads.. see if they are warped... if they are not warped then try a set of Permatorque gaskets and keep an eye on the compression ratios on the Cylinders..

I checked the block and the head. Both are straight, thank goodness....
Got some valve lapping compound that came in two grits. It worked very well.
I will start smoothing out the passage ways and flush the coolent chanels in
the morning. After I get this head put back together, I'll start on the right side
one and then install them on the block at the same time.

I finaly got the ports cleaned up and steam cleaned. After the paint cures, I want to scrape it off of the letters on the intake. Its getting there I guess. At least the other head will be easier to do.

Today I got started on the right side head cleanup.
I remove each rocker arm and push rod one at a time to make sure I did not get them mixed up. I noticed that on the number 8 cylinder, the intake side push rod looked to be worn down a bit. In the side by side picture below with the exhaust push rod, You can tell the deference. What do you guys thing went wrong?

Age. The push rod could have gummed oil in it stopping flow to the rocker. Many things really. I would look at the cup on the rocker too. Also the the pivot ball. Really it just looks like a well worn motor to me.

is that the lifter end or the rocker end... if the rocker is worn too you might need to replace them both...
