Ouch, is it were your sunroof patch is by any chance? I could see it lifting there first. Sorry to hear this. I would want to puke.

Yes, close to the area. I can't see any sign of the weld where it popped. Going to the shop next week to see what he says. If he flakes on me I'll take it to the guy who painted the Austin, and see if he can fix it.

Still sucks no matter who fixes it. I have seen more than my share of 1/4 panel welds start popping out. Here in the rust belt a trip to the junk yard is educational.

My buddy has a 87' GN that has had at least three full paint jobs in the 15 yrs swe've been buds. I have seen his car stripped and blasted and coated with who knows what. EVERY time the 1/4 windows start bubbling up after a few years. These things are the reasons I want nothing to do with any kind of hole in my floors to mount the exhaust. I my mind everything rusts no matter how well its taken care of.

Good luck. Post picks if it goes in for surgery.

The metal underneath is clean as new metal. No sign of anything that caused the pop. I'll post some pics once I get the bodyshop to look at it.

Its the acids or something that form in the weld pool that cause the paint to lift sometimes. Weld a bead on a piece of sheet metal and set it outside next to your garage for some time. The weld is what rusts first.

There is a particular 69 GTO that sticks out in my mind. It's in a junk yard here. The place has every muscle car you can think of. You need a tetanus shot just to look at them. Anyhow, the GTO had 1/4's welded on at some point in its life. You can see perfectly the welds along to top because it literally is a rust line along the top of the 1/4.

I don't know exactly the term or how to describe what is happened. Maybe its not the weld in your case, I was just throwing out reasons to help ease your mind a little. At least that would make it no ones fault.

I'm not sure what may have caused it, but it's pretty dismal. Not sure if I'll even want to keep it once it's fixed. I can't imagine what I'd do if it is fixed and did it again sometime! I've even debated putting the black vinyl top back on, but that's too much work to do and install the trim again.

Stopped at the bodyshop today and showed the owner the bad roof. He determined that the bodyman had "put filler on too thick, and it should have been glassed over the weld first."
It's really a thin coat of less than 1/8", but he wants to strip the roof down to bare metal and glass the welds. He'll paint the whole roof and blend it in, but can't get it in until mid Sept.
Here's a pic of the ugly spot:

I can see where it's lifting in about a 6" circle around the area tht popped.

Your body guy needs a hug. I glad he is taking care of it without hesitation.

You wouldn't say that if you saw him! He's pretty good guy, but smells like cigarettes, and has a scraggly beard and thinning shoulder length hair. If he hadn't been reccommended by my buddy I'd have never gone to him after the first impression!

Did you get this fixed or what are the plans after talking to the guy with sweet hair?
