man i had a 76 years ago and had that problem. i finally got it started once and it was in gear wouldnt go back to park. so i had the emergency brake on and let it run. it stalled out for some reason a few minutes later. couldnt get it back to park.couldnt get the key to turn off eighther.and it caught fire under console.smoke was so strong had a hard time getting hood release popped to unhook battery. by then the whole interior was in flames. it was trashed. i pulled motor trans and trashed it. never looked to see what really caused it. was maybe 18yrs old back then.what i am trying to say is be damn carefull and fix it now. dont let it go.i am also in nuetral saftey switch myself. good luck probably just needs adjusted

 

Well I'll have to eat my words on my second reply. This is TRUE! I took my console apart today to install the B&M Megashifter, and what did I find inside?....A neutral safety swith, complete with reverse switch too! Mounted right there in the middle of my factory linkage. No adjustment on the switch, and it appears the adjustment is done by adjusting the cable end.
