Why the 4L80 trans? The 4L60/TH700R4 has more than enough strength to handle your engine and it is a better fit inside your tunnel. The 4L80 is a big truck tranny, and I am not sure but I think they are only electronic shift. are you going to get the computer for the trans and have that in the car? The 4L60 is a TH700R4 and the 4th gen Camaros use a 4L60E in all years except 93. The 4L60E does require the computer for proper shifting and as far as I know after 94 the main engine computer also handled the trans. I do not know for sure if there is a stand alone computer for either trans. JMHO I would use a mid to late 80's th700R4 if you want the overdrive.

because the 4L80 is really strong and not any cheaper than the 4L60 but the 4L60 is weaker and has too low of a first gear like the 700R4. The 4L80 trans fit's good in 2nd gen camaros and I will get it full manual with no computer control. 700R4's are usually weak and I wouldn't trust built ones over 500-550hp because the apply area for the 3rd gear clutches can't really be upgraded. 2004R's can be built stronger than a 700R4 but i like the strength, OD, and gear ratios of the 4L80

Horsepower is one thing, torque is another. The 700R4/4L60 in stock form is designed to handle no more than 360 lb. ft. of torque. They can be built up to handle a lot more though. The stock 4L80E has a torque rating of 440, which is is equivalent to what the T400 can handle, but they both are physically bigger and heavier. And yes you can buy a stand-alone controller for the 4L80E, but it ain't cheap at a little over $1,100. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4l80e.htm

yeah but the 4L80 is rated for 440 torque in vehicles up to 8000lbs. I'm going full manual on the 4l80 trans so don't need the stand alone controller

Yep, then that's the ticket. And you'll be able to beat on that one, where the 4L60 would otherwise turn to toast.

4l80 also has a close ratio shift. he wont be getting that bang into second, that should help keep the tires from breaking lose on the shift. i would recomend the 4l80 for this app. great trany.

OK with the full manual body I could see the benifits. How about the trans X-member? It is designed in these cars for non OD transmissions... What are you going to use in it's place?

I am really good with the 4th gen cars since I was fixing them when they were new in both the dealerships as a mech and as a bodyman. I am looking into buying a 78 Type LT and I still have alot to learn about this body. I want to put a LS1/4L60 combo in mine from a 4th gen Camaro, I know there are subframes setup to drop this in but I dont know what is needed to be fabricated to drop it in the factory subframe.

You'll have to do your own fab work for the crossmember. This link shows putting a 4L80 into a 2nd gen F-Body (Firebird), doing a little "remodeling" to a T400 crossmember. You can ignore the part about adapting the Pontiac engine to the trans. http://www.blockersperformance.com/a...s/80eswap.html

I can either mod my crossmember or buy one that's made to fit a 4l80 into a 2nd gen camaro. If i buy one there a couple hundred dollars.
