Default steering problem

Right now in my 67 camaro I have about 20 degrees of play in the steering while the car is just sitting. It has manual steering and I was wondering what should I look to repair/replace to fix this? My first thought was to replace the grommets in the control arm and sway bar, but I was told I should look at the steering linkage before I replace the grommets. If anyone has a little advice I could use any help, thanks.

Do you have the rack and pinion? Look at the inner and outter tie rods, if you have a steering box still, check the center link and the idler arm and the pitman arm.

New sway bar dushings will do very little for your problems. You need to take the car to a good front end shop & find out what the problem is. It could be a bunch of theings, from loose mounting bolts, tie rod ends, steering gear, ball joints, etc.. In any event, do not drive it as you may have a serious accident.

Well, seems like all the things I've been told to look at are possibilities, so I'm gonna have everything checked out. But yeah I'm not gonna drive it for sure, I'm not putting insurance on it till I get it in better condition.

Your steering box, along with other parts, might be getting worn. There is a stud with a lock nut on it that will tighten up the play. But it would be best to have it all inspected.
