Can someone please tell me what holds this handle up. I know there is a clip on top but what keeps it from sliding down???? Thanks!

Mine came with a megashifter already installed but if I remember correctly there's a C-clip at the base of the shifter **** that slides into a slot at the base of the ****.

yeah, mine had a little piece of metal that just stuck in it through the side. If you look at that ****, there should be a little rectangle hole in it. At least I'm pretty sure my '81 was the one that was like that.
