That's funny because this camaro does not have a smog pump either! When I ran the RPO it says there was a California emissions add on for $70. Since the car was not purchased in California I am assuming they did not add it on when they purchased the car.

I'm in CA and I'm kind of in the same boat. I own a '77 camaro that has a 305 in it. I have an '86 350 that I want to put in it but am not sure what all to do to make it legal. This is my first project car so as of right now i'm only wanting to learn how everything works before I put a bunch of $ into it.

It has been discussed here a few timess and I'd say take it in to get tested with the 305. Then go home and pull it.

And that has crossed my mind too. I mean if I have to SMOG every 2 years, then it won't be a big deal to swap them. Hell it'll teach me how to swap.

You wont have to worry about your motor switch. In 77 the only smog parts on the motor were the cat and smog pump (this was an option & mine does not have it as it's not a California car). Does your 77 have the smog pump option?

If so you would only need the smog pump if your 77 had one. But personally I would keep your 86 smog equipment on there as California emissions is always changing.

With that said, my 77 sat for 3 years before I bought it and all I did to the 305 is replace battery, change oil, plugs and wires as well as put a new magnaflow catalytic converter on it and it passed smog with flying colors in L.A. of all places.

That's all history now that I have a 355 SBC in it now.

Yeah the SMOG pump is on there. I plan on putting everything back on the car that was there with the 305. Is there a way around the EFE or does it need to be there?

I am not using the EFE valve on my new motor.
