Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for as a good starting point to my father and son project. I would love to get a complete car that is drivable but I'm seeing rolling chassis for 8k. Have people lost there minds or am I just out of touch with this generation camaro? I will admit I have always been a truck person so i'm for sure on new ground. Can anyone offer me some guidance and point me in the right direction as far as costs and what I should be looking for or running from. I have a nice 71 Ford pick up I been trying to trade for a new project, seems tough though, trading a truck to a car person.

guess it depends on where you live, i'm in IL and see lots of workable cars go for 2,000 or lower. i picked up my 78 for 1,300 in Indiana, maybe move your search farther out

 

I been looking all over the US i'll gopick it up i dont mind just looking for a good start.

what year you looking for? whatever year 2nd gen you look at just make sure your rear frame rails and leaf pockets are good.

All kinds to look for but what type of project are you looking to get in to? full resto then as long as the frames and pockets are good its easily restorable. but a small project in decent shape i would be looking at the quad panels cause replacing them is a heck of a job, the dash/cowl corners (most around me are rotted), floor/trunk pans (easily replaced for a couple $) are always rotted. but for 70-73 parts are harder to find nowadays, even those little interior parts but luckily alot of parts are being repoped now. very expansive for a 70-73 build so $6-8000 for a good roller is average price (around here anyway). 78-81 is a little easier to rebuild imo, because of part availability and cheaper prices. could always convert a later 2nd gen to a early (front end, tail panel and rear window could fool anyone at a glance).

Well your choice of a '70-'73 will definitely make it tougher to find a 2nd gen in anything solid and under the $7k range, unless it's just a rolling shell. I rarely see them for sale in project condition, and when I see them under $5k they usually need a lot of work to finish.
There is a '71 locally for sale here that sounds like a great price, ($1950) but for sure a project:
