new to the forum and need some help. I am redoing the interior on my 81 z28 and need to get the old shift lever out of the socket to install a new shiny chrome one. Any idea how to do it. Here is a pic...

 

According to Chilton's 1967-1981, the shifter should be unbolted as an assembly from trans.

Getting back to your question, obviously GM has two pieces stuck together.
Is the stick an interference fit into the shifter?
Rubber mounted? Any fasteners securing it?
