Default Shift Lever Removal?.......

I am currently replacing the carpet in my 81 Z and I was wondering how exactly do you remove the entire shift lever? I have everything out of the interior, console, trim, you name it, I just need to remove the shift lever so I can begin to lay the carpet. It looks as though the shift lever is just held on by a piece of rubber but I cant for the life of me figure out how to get the lever off. I was going to remove the nut from the entire shift lever, (located at the base of the lever) but I didnt want to mess the the other assembly the nut what holding in place, ant info would be appreciated.......

The shifter is mounted to the transmission. Are you talking about the boot? It must be a ITM if you can't figure it out. Hurst shifters have two bolts that hold the stick on. Very easy. As for the carpet. You should be able to do it with the shifter in. Post a pic.

I was looking through your pics of the 78 Z and I have the same setup as in the picture of your tranny, except for your shift lever is held in by 2 bolts, mine isnt. The shift lever on my 81 Z is held in by what looks to be a rubber stopper of some sort, it has the same layout except where the 2 bolts are at in your pic, there is 2 rubber stoppers.......

I can't for the life of me remeber how they work. My shifter was bought for one of my old Novas because from the day I bought the car the stock shifter would hang up between gears. It was only two days before I had a new Hurst on order.I would think you could install carpet without taking it out. Fold the carpet in half and start at the sil plate then where it touches the handle theres wher you hole goes. As long as its centered front to back too. There is a ton of forgiveness there.

Looks like a 1/4" allen head right in the hole in the middle.

I think Damon is correct. I think there's an allen bolt that's accessible through the round hole in the center. The rubber is to isolate the shift handle to eliminate vibration transfer, so once the allen is removed it can be pulled straight up.

Defiently not an allen head, we thought so also but the piece is all rubber. Also thought that maybe we could use a punch to knock the rubber piece out but that also didnt work.......
