How do I remove the back deck of my '78?

Exclamation How do I remove the back deck of my '78?

I am replacing the back deck (where the speakers are in the rear), but I can't seem to find any way to remove the old one. Does anyone know how to?

Are you talking about the actual metal part,or just the cover over the rear area.If you mean the cardboard type cover back there,you just need to start at the front edge and get under the vinyl strip and use a putty knife to work the glue loose,eventually you will be able to pull it loose.Also take the side panels and sail panels off to make it easier to get to the edges.

or you can do what i did. Leave the car sitting under a tree for 10 years with the rear window leaking. That little shelf just rots right out of there >=)

Did you find a good place to get a replacement back deck or are you making one somehow? Any info would be nice since I am planning on painting my '79 RS and would like to replace my back deck which has seen much better days. It is still there holding the speakers but looks like it might go about any time!

Very easy to make one from a piece of masonite, then cover it with naugahyde and it's good to go. I did mine that way, but covered it with wool carpetting to match the rest the rear area.

classic industrys.com has the rear trays for like $20.00. Not a bad price for time saved on making one.

I never consider time making a car part in the equation. Sometimes I spend so much time making a part that I make about $2 an hr. if I charged myself. It's usually about making it better, or just seeing if I can do it.
