Harmonic Balancer install help
Please forgive me, my first post.
My 18 year old son got this 78 Camaro LT 305. He was driving it around and says he hears some horrible rattle from the engine all of a sudden.
We look and the harmonic balancer has separated? Ok , that is weird.
So we remove everything, pull it off, begin to install the new one, and how far does it press on? We have it slightly under the timing indicator with maybe a 1/4 in gap to the timing cover. (at the top).
It was real hard to press on, using the proper tool.
How do we know it is far enough ?
also we nicked the damn radiator so now we have to replace that too.
and getting that crankshaft bolt off (an on) is real fun with trying to wedge a screwdriver into the flywheel.
any help is greatly appreciated.
thanks
charles

Press on the h/bal until it stops as it presses against the crankshaft timing chain sprocket.
You can remove a spark plug and the cylinder chosen, shove in a length of clothes line rope with cylinder coming up on compression stroke and use this set-up as a stop.
Once done, rotate crankshaft opposite direction and remove rope and replace spark plug and attach wire.
