Default frame repair opinions

my 72 frame after I separated it from the body, on one side the frame appears to have rusted or been drilled, I was going to replace that spot, with some new steel, would that be advisable,

or any other suggestions???

compare the drivers side with the passengers, the drivers is much bigger, what do you suggest

If the rest of the metal looked ok I would weld a plate on the underside and then weld a filler piece in the top to make it the same level and cut out a new hole. you could do it a number of ways I guess doesnt look like too big of a deal. The biggest problem I had with mine was the rear frame rail area and where the front of the leaf spring bolts on.

Camaro performers magazine had an article exactly on what you're asking. It was the September 2007 issue, page 43 and 44 where they use a heavy duty industrial steel washer. They mark the area with the washer as a template then use a greenlee hydraulic hole punch to knock out the hole exactly to make sure they're getting rid of all the deteriorated metal. Next they use a small grinder to clean it up for an even fit. After that they just clamp it in place, do a thorough weld and grind it down. In fact I'm about 90% sure that it's the exact same spot they do it on theirs that you have in the pic.

i think i will try both options thanks for the input, just curious does anyone happen to know approx. what the diameter of the hole should be? seems to be about 1 1/2 -2" is that gonna be too much for the body mounts?

off the top of my head, I don't know the size but why don't you just measure your mounts and cut it a little oversized. I do know they are a standard size. some resto-houses might even sell the replacement plates so they would know the opening size
