Default Carb Problems

Ok im 17 so bear with me, imstill learning stuff. Ok its a 1981 Z28 All original and this car has been sitting for the past 10 years. Its still in real good condition only 62,000 original miles on the 350 small block. Now we finally got it on the road this spring and it was alright. I finally started to test what kind of power it had and i was realatively disappointed. My 02 Calvalier could beat it. So then we kept doing small things like air filter, spark plugs, distributer cap/rotor, and this car has been taken care of very well, and there really was no performance gain. So after being frustrated with no power we finally discovered a vacume leak between the carborator and the manifold. So we were likemaybe that was the problem, nope no difference besides a smoother idle. So now we were suspicious of the carb, so we took the air filter off and watched the carb. Ok the 4 barrels would not open(unless manually opened with your hand). and the and only one of the primaries was working correctly all the time and the other only sparatically. so our guess is what there is a vacume hose or something not on, why wont the 4 barrels (secondaries open)open? Any help would be appreciated.

The secondaries have a lever that locks them shut until the choke is fully open. This lever might be stuck, it is on the passenger side of the carb and sits just above a pin that is cross-drilled into the throttle shaft.

yeah. it could be what jrs72rs said. i would just take the carb off and rebuild it. cause it could be something like the accelerator pump seal is worn out or something. or get a nice edelbrock carb that can deliver more fuel and has no emission controls on it. that would def. help out big time. get rid of the egr valve. and for more power you can do a cam. that would help also.

We have asked about buying a carb. But when we asked we were told that this car's carb has settings thathave to be syncronized with a computer the car. Do you know of a compatible carb for this?

Don't get rid of the carb, rebuild the one you have. Sinceits not squirting gas like it should, I'd say the accelerater pump is probably shot after all that time sitting. And the vacumm diaphram may be shot that actuate the secondaries....but whatever it is....a overhaul should bring it back to snuff.
I have the stock carb on my Camaro, theres nothing wrong with using them. I have had duel quads and Corvette tri-power on my car and it still runs just as good with the stocker. (But I really loved the tri-power.)
