Default Blowing Smoke. Seals or Rings?

80 Z28 stock 350 block and heads with 148K miles.
Edlebrock intake with Holley 600 carb.
Burning oil.
Have a little oil smoke from exaust during idle but puffs out a cloud taking off from dead stop and when punching it at a cruising speed.
Car seems to idle and run fine aside from that.
Could this be rings or bad valve seals?
How can I find out?
Thanks.

If it blows blue smoke when you first start the engine cold, your valve seals and/or guides are shot.
While cruising down the road, back off the throttle for a couple of seconds, then hit the throttle again. If you blow blue smoke then, your rings are worn.
If the engine blows smoke both those times, it's a tired worn out puppy. And with those miles, if they're original, that's what I'm figuring it is.

Thanks.
Unforntunately it will be sometime before I can get it out on the road and check it out.
Currently have 14 inches of snow.
I think you are right though.
Looks like a rebuild in the near future.

From your description, the engine seems to have seen better days.
