Default 1970 engine code

I looked at a motor this weekend in Beloit, WI. with a CRE code...should have been a 1970 350 300hpSS. but the dates all over the motor were August of 1968....is this possible??

Could code have been a restamp?
Partial VIN in proper place?
Could the deck broach marks be seen?

Might be correct as foundry dates could be a stockpile of blocks and heads.
Do the block and head casting numbers match the casting dates?

Default CRE block

It didnt have any partial VIN in the stamp area, the motor looks like it was pulled from the car and set in a corner, so no evidence of any dismantling or work done.
Tell me more about the deck broach marks.....

Broach marks are from the original cutting tool and generally run the length of the deck. You can search for the pads and see broach marks. Very rough cut.
If deck has been shaved, a smoother, but not perfect deck surface will appear.
Also, if decked, if requested by customer to not deck the pad, there will be a definite line next to the cylinder head keeping the original stamps.
Otherwise, shops deck the pad and restamp as it reduces value, not original.
