Default wheel spin question

I was told when I bought the 68 that it has an open rearend and I really do believe that it is open but today I was showing my brother my car and I break torqued and the rear slid to the side leaving two marks. I had him do it for me to watch and again they both turned but I had him go harder and the drivers wheel stopped and the passenger wheel did spin like it should. My question is how is it possible for both to spin in an open rear end?

if you have equal traction on both sides both wheels will spin. if you brake a little it will give more traction to both sides. have used the e brake in the mud or snow more than once.
