A friend is testing me, saying a true SS did not come from the factory with a/c. I said sure it could. Can anyone verify it. Thanks.

 

I will have to look into it when I get home but here is a SWAG. The SS came with a 350 or a 396. I fit were a BB then no probably not. Then again it could have been ordered with one. Of course it also depends on the year. I say no because I would think the A/C stuff would be in the way of a engine- hence the SWAG. (scientific wild a$$ guess) let me double check when I get home and will have an answer for you (if I remember) in about 24 hours.

 

An SS can have A/c or not, it does not matter.

 

The RPO L78, L79/L89 and RPO Z28 did not have A/C. This is the SS396 and Z28.

So its the Z28 that did not have A/C, not the SS. Unless it was the SS396. This is true for the 67 and 68. I could search the 69 lit I have but am pretty sure its the same results.

 

The L35 [325 hp] and L34 [350 hp] SS396 engines , could be had with factory air.
GM did not apply A/C units to solid-lifter motors. like the L78 [375 hp] and
the L89 [aluminum heads] 396ci engines,
L72 [iron block and aluminum heads] and ZL1 [all aluminum motor] 427ci
and the Z28 302 engine .

 

Yup, I see it now. I should have gone ahead and dug that little bit more. So to redz06... your friend is wrong. A true SS could come with factory air. Its the Z28 (and perhaps COPO) that did not.

 

My 69 SS-350 was indeed Factory A/C as well.
