Default Neutral safety switch install help!

I have a 67 Camaro SS 427 clone that my father just gave me, and neutral safety switch on the console "T" handle shifter broke; I installed a new switch and as soon as I moved the shifter from park to drive, the white plastic piece inside the switch that moves over the contacts broke through the top of the switch body.
Is there a certain sequence/position that the plastic slide has to be in as it relates to the shifter, ie... does the shifter have to be in neutral when the switch is installed? I don't want to break another one. Does anyone have experience/install instructions?

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks for the reply, but the books didn't offer much help. Any other suggestions?

I've never had a problem with one. I haven't done one in a few years but it was always just very obvious to me when I put them on.

just sit back and look at it while thinking about it. it should be a very simple common sense thing once you think about it

sometimes people just get overwhelmed with the simple stuff until the step back a bit and look at things logically. then it might just pop in your head

good luck
