Default Neutral safety switch important????

is the park reverse neutral switch that goes on the shifter necesary to drive the vehicle? I am asking this because my car used to be manual and now i have an automatic and my harness does not have that connector for the shifter. I understand i will not have reverse lights. But i do have the old clutch switch spliced together to allow it to start.
