Default Front Coil Spring Replacement

I am replacing the front springs on my 67 convertible and am having trouble. As I tighten down the spring compression tool on the new spring before trying to put it in, the arms / hooks begin to slip down / rotate, eventually letting loose if I go too far. Does anybody have any advice? Thanks!

Have you taken the spindle off or are you trying to compress them in between with the spindle on? You should be able to replace the springs without a spring compressor if the spindles are off, especially if the motor is still in the car. Put the spring in and use the weight of the car by jacking up the lower control arm and re-installing the spindle.
