Fluid Leak - 396
Just bought a 1969 SS/RS with a 396. I noticed a small fluid leak what I believe is oil. It is coming from the drivers side of engine compartment. First spot was probably a 4" diameter.....after car sitting for two days. Today it is only 2 mall drops. I don't have a floor jack yet so I tried to eye where the fluid could be coming from based on where the drops landed. It seems as though the drops are coming from the steering assembly or maybe dripping off the steering assembly. Could it be power steering fluid? Didn't think that power steering fluid had an oily consistency.
Input greatly appreciated. Couldn't believe the car could leak a 4" spot so I thought it was filled with too much oil since it's only dripping 1 to 2 drops.
Not sure if this is anything but when warming up the exhaust on the drivers side appears white with RPM's at 1.5 - 2k. At idle can't see anything.

So many possibilities, you will likely need to do some detective work to figure it out. I would first steam/pressure clean the engine and engine compartment making it easier to see any leaks. Run the engine for a bit and then shut it off, get under the hood with a worklight and look for signs of leaking, could be as simple as avalve cover gasket. If nothing shows up topside, crawl underneath with the worklight and check everywhere. Some possibilities: oil pan gasket, rear main seal, small blocks were infamous for leaks at the rear valley gasket between intake and block and I don't know if the same issue occurred on big blocks like the 396, none of those three are likely as it sounds like your leak is toward the front, oil line leak to oil pressure gauge, etc., and on and on. When you have the engine and compartment clean it's usually fairly easy to see. It could also be power steering fluid, while normally light colored and thinner than oil, very old or burned PS fluid could appear like oil on the floor. You may also have a leak in the PS fluid lines. Let us know what you find.

your question is just way too vague to even begin to take a guess. any guess at all would be worthless. after you clean the engine and jack it up, then you can give us a better idea to be able to help you out
good luck
