Default Engine Swap

I bought a 406 small bock for my 67 vert. The guy i bought it from was a local mechanic for a long time and agreed to help me swap the engines since im new to game. Me and him have been working on it for 2 months, when i can get ahold of him. We have the new engine in, almost everything connected except my heater core was messed up and i was lacking the vaccume hose to the transmission and the vaccume hose to the distruborter. But we got it started he timed it and it got too late to finish the rest. So the next day i plugged the heater hoses in the manifold and the water pump and connected the remaining hoses. I tried to fire it up and it does not run smooth like before and the volts meter jumps up back and forth. And, to top it all off the mechanic hasnt answered his phone in 2 weeks. Does anyone have any insite to what could be wrong?

Guessing, that when you plugged the vacuum hoses in, you fixed a good air leak and the idle speed is now too low. Try increasing the idle speed and adjusting the idle fuel mixture.

He means you had a huge air leak before and now that it's connected, the leak is gone. Adjust the idle on the carb. As far as the VOLT meter...should not have been affected this except for the fact that the engine's RPMs are erratic and charging is not what it should be. Once the engine is running smooth, then check your gauge. Could be a loose wire or poor connection.

Make sure you plug vaccuum hose for distributor in the ported vaccuum connection on carb ,it's usually on pass. side of carb towards front of car. start engine , put your finger over littletube sticking out of side of carb, shouldn't have any vaccuum at idle , when you rev engine vaccuum should be present at vaccuum connection , this is where vaccuum advance hose should be connected. good luck.
