Camshaft differences
I currently have a Mark IV 454 in my camaro with a comp cam. The comp cam is hydraulic and spec'd at 280/280 advertised duration, 230/230 duration at .50, and 520/520 lift. The cam in the new motor I am replacing my motor with is a roller cam, 211/230 duration at .50, and .510/.540 lift. I love the way my current motor sounds at idle, and the new motor will have a much better set up as far as heads, pistons, etc....will I retain the general sound at idle with the new cam? Headers and exhaust will be exactly the same. I realize this is a very superficial look considering all the variables......the new motor is spec'd much better than the old one. Your input is appreciated!

Thanks Y2K....I ended up buying the Chevy Performance ZZ454 and as I was checking out cars on Youtube, I searched ZZ454 and about 50 tubes came up with cars that have that motor....at idle, acceleration, etc. Several had the distinctive flowmaster sound, and it would appear that I will keep the sound I like so much and get the performance and streetability that I am also looking for Pretty happy guy here!

I did a little research and found the current comp cam to be a 110 LSA and the new cam to be 112. Based on what I read with all things remaining the same, the new cam's idle might be a little more tame.....but given the differences in duration and lift between the two, I don't know where it will end up. At any rate, I guess we will see next week!

I've been reading cam specs till my eyes started bleeding.. It's crazy how may different grinds there are. I contacted Chris Straub and he recommended a Adv. 288/300 .050" 229/241 LIft 600/570 with 1.7 109 Lobe Sep Which is probably what i'll use in my 454
