67 power steering gearbox issue
Hi All,
So the power steering gearbox on my 67 is "locking up" in almost the strait position. My first thought was that I must have messed up when trying to determine the strait position (between locks), but before I connected my hoses from the pump, I made sure that when I turned the steering wheel from lock to lock the wheels appeared to turn full left to full right (had the front two tires off the ground via jack stands).
Here's where it gets confusing, I hooked up the hoses and started the car, turned it full right, and when I try to turn it full left, I stops turning when the tires are facing almost strait. I can't turn left at all! So I'm thinking the gearbox is bad, since I was able to turn lock to lock before connecting the hoses? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

It's possible you could still have some air trapped. Jack the front wheels off the ground again, and with the engine off, turn the wheels lock to lock a good 10-12 times. Drop it back down, start the engine, and see if that makes it any better. Bleeding the system with the engine running, when there's still a lot of air, will make the fluid frothy (whipped up with air) and less effective. Letting the car set for a while to allow the air in the fluid to dissipate may help too.
Thanks for the reply, Camaro 69! I attempted to do as you suggested, but the gearbox isn't allowing me to turn it passed that "locked" part (strait), running or not, with the wheels off the ground. It just gets stuck there and won't turn any further. I am going to try removing it and see if I can get it to go lock to lock outside of the car again. If I can, I will see if I can do what you suggested and hope for the best. If I can't get it to work, I will try a different gearbox.
