1969 Camaro L78
Hello all,
My father bought a 1969 L78 Camaro brand new off the lot in the summer of '69. It is orange with a white hockey stick stripe down the side with black interior. He raced it regularly until about mid '74 when he removed and sold the engine in an attempt to keep the rest of the car. Family obligations finally got the best of him and he sold the car in '76. In 2004, the third owner that had recently bought the car tracked my dad down and stopped by with it so he could get stories from the original owner and to see if he had the original engine (he even had the original Protect-O-Plate with my dad's name on it). That was a great day as we all had thought the car had long since been run through the crusher. It was in incredibly great shape (original paint, trans, rear end, etc.) and had a 427 GM crate engine installed from the latter 1970s.
Flash forward to this week. The third owner is looking to sell the car and I'm thinking about scooping it up. It is probably still in great shape, but I'm not sure of value as I'm a late-model Mustang guy so 1960's Camaros are way out of my wheel house. Just looking if anybody could take a stab at a value of the car today. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures or miles on the car. He just left a voicemail on my phone to give me right of first refusal, but he did say that he's looking for 60K. Car has original paint, trans, interior, etc. and it looked great in 2004. My dad changed the hood to a cowl hood (I believe from GM) and the engine was changed as described above. My father talked to Ken Schoenthaler back in 2004 (he lives in our area) after he met with the third owner and described the crate engine to him and he commented that if it didn't have the original engine, that the crate engine installed would be the next best thing. My memory of these sequence of events is a little fuzzy, but hope this paints a picture of things as I remember them.
This car has been a family legend since I was little, so it would be great to have it back, but again I'm not a Camaro guy. If anyone has any idea what a fair offer would be (I understand that without pictures, detailed option list, miles, etc. that this is difficult), I would certainly appreciate any thoughts. Thanks in advance for any info.
