First thing I'd do is get under the car and make sure the trans is still bolted up tight and not moving back, that and make sure the shifter is tight on the trans, they do tend to get loose sometimes.

Well maybe a different shift lever would help,Hurst makes a bunch of different levers for their shifters.
It's been decades since I messed with one and it was on a T-10 in a '69 but something in my memory seems like there were a couple different mounting holes in the shifter mounting bracket or trans and different length rods available. Then again I could be remembering something else. lol

Shifter box can be rotated forward , insert 3/16 inch welding rod into alignment holes of box and shift levers and readjust linkage.
Or, as Y2K suggests, get another stick. Or add a spacer under the trans mount on crossmember.

I agree with the above options. A new shift lever would be your easiest option. I cut my floor a long time ago and I have regretted it ever since. Since then, I have my Hurst shift lever custom bent to fit. Turned out great, but now got a gaping hole I need have to weld back.
