Read the link below, it will explain some exhaust stuff. The idea is to run as little backpressure as possible. The "burned valves" scare comes from the fact that when you make your exhaust more free-flowing, less backpressure can make your engine run with a leaner fuel-to-air ratio. Older engines (that don't have a computer to adjust for fuel richness) would need to have the stock carb richened up a little, both for optimum performance reasons and to compensate for the lean issue (which is actually one in the same).
