Have you done a leak test? I find it hard to believe that an original compressor is not at least leaking from the front seal. If it was my car and I was driving it a lot I would just replace the compressor. On a car that old with no history I would order a compressor the VIR eliminator kit and an O-ring kit. I would just replace every seal, but you could just put R134a in there and drive it for a little while to sort of test it. Looks like the VIR kits come with a new dryer/receiver. It will not be cold enough for your liking and it can not be adjusted but it should be a little cold. You can get an idea how well your system is working/sealing. If the system has been empty for a long time you should vacuum it down for 3-4 hours. Close off you gages and turn off your vacuum pump now and then to verify the system is holding vacuum. If the system will not hold vacuum it will not hold pressure
Just a heads up your original hoses are not rated for R134a. The R134a is made up of much smaller molecules and the old R12 will see seepage right through the hose. Should be less then a lb over the winter so it is hard to justify new hoses to save 6-8 dollars a year. .
